Hello Pat,

Great to hear from you after all this time. I was just flicking through some photos and there is one of you and I watching two big beachmasters fighting outside the post office!

I am glad that telecoms have moved on since those days, it must make like a lot easier, although I really enjoyed the solitude which, as I mentioned above, made the rest of the world rather irrelevant! Is still have 885// imprinted on my mind from sending the same met code over the teleprinter hour after hour.

Anyway, nice to hear from you and glad you are doing well there on SG!

Regards

SGA member and historian, Bob Burton will be speaking to the Friends of Scott Polar Research Institute on 17 March, but the event is open to all and is free.

Accounts of the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-16, pay little attention to the month that “Endurance” spent at South Georgia. Some only start as the ship heads into the Weddell Sea. More emphasis is given to Shackleton's return aboard “James Caird” and his crossing of the Island. Bob Burton has been examining the journals of the expedition members and finds that several members of the expedition made good use of their time in that month as they supposedly waited for ice to clear further south. The scientists set out to explore parts of the Island, meanwhile Shackleton and the crew made preparations following his decision to try to winter “Endurance” in the Antarctic. The journals and newspaper reports allow an assessment of Shackleton’s plans and preparations for the expedition, his reasons for visiting the Island and spending so long there, and what the whalers really advised him about conditions in the Weddell Sea.

Time: Saturday, 17 March 2012, 7:30pm for 8pm

Venue: SPRI Lecture Theatre, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, UK,

Hi Andy, I was the Marine Officer on my first contract then and remember you. I am still working here on SG and things have changed a lot since that winter when I lived up in Shackleton House. My wife Sarah is now with me (no more shouting across the HF to the Falklands on Friday evenings - "roger roger roger over"). The comms is a lot more advanced, I am doing this online from KEP over the permanently open narrowband (128kbps) VSAT satellite link and have spent the day setting up a point-to-point wifi link to the Museum as the fibreoptic cable is goosed. But the best times are still when I get to enjoy the real island. We got back this morning from a week's holiday living in the hut at Corral Bay the other side of Cumberland Bay with a mere VHF call back to KEP each day, dried rations heated up on a paraffin primus stove and the bay echoing with the sounds of the albatross, moulting elephant seals, fur seal pups and mums, and the occasional reindeer cantering past. We had to do a bit of digging to allow a couple of elephant seals to escape from some deep wallows. Still magic. All the best, Pat.

Hi Andy,

As I left the first Inmarsat terminal arrived but of course the operating costs were high so we stuck with the morse and teleprinters. Surprisingly the whole experience for me was made all the better because of the isolation, it gave one the opportunity for self-reflection. It the first and only time in my life where what was happening in the rest of the world was rather irrelavant. I loved the wildlife and remember freeing an elephant seal, which became entangled in wire around the post office, in the early hours of the morning in a howling gale! Wiffice it to say we removed all the wire around KEP much to the annoyance of our masters back in Port Stanley!

I enjoyed the visit from David Attenborough and Alistair Fothergill during the filming of Life In The Freezer for the BBC and still have my copy of Bob Headland's wonderful text "The Island of South Georgia"

Regards

Thanks for this Andrew! The story of Frank's ashes being interred at South Georgia has hit the news in a few places - there is an interesting article at http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/antarctica/8918916/Explorers-ashes-finally-laid-to-rest-next-to-Sir-Ernest-Shackleton.html for example.

Not sure if anyone still keeps an ear on the radio at KEP for ham radio operators these days, now that internet and phone lines have hit the island!

Hello,

I lived on South Georgia from May - Nov 1992 as the telecommunications engineer initially supporting the Worcester and Sherwood Forresters and later the Queen's Regiment (who amalgamated with the Royal Hampshire Regiment whilst we were on South Georgia in 1992 to form the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment).

I was recently listening to BBC Radio 4 and happened across an edition of Crossing Continents regarding Frank Wild. Information from the BBC website is copied below.

"Sir Ernest Shackleton has a heroic place in the annals of Antarctic exploration, famously for his expedition on the aptly-named Endurance in 1914. He intended to cross over the Antarctic landmass. Instead, his ship became stuck in ice which eventually crushed it. Shackleton and his crew made a desperate voyage in three small boats to Elephant Island, where they split up. The men on the island were left under the command of Shackleton's Number 2, Frank Wild. Shackleton and a small team sailed 800 miles to South Georgia, from where they mounted a rescue mission for Wild's group.
Nearly a century on, reporter Karen Bowerman joins a group of Wild's relatives retracing his extraordinary journey to the southern seas. They are bearing Wild's ashes, which they bury next to Shackleton, on South Georgia.
Producer: John Murphy."

The URL is http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b018grht

I read a lot about Sir Earnest and his number 2, Frank Wild, whilst during my stay at KEP and this excellent programme reminded me of the most magical experiences during the South Georgia winter of 1992. Sadly, I didn't keep in contact with the others dozen or so soldiers and marines that were there at the same time but my memories are still very fresh, even the call-sign and the ham radio station we operated in our spare time. It was no surprise that we were inundated with QSL request with a call-sign VP8 CLL and were very thankful to the BT Portishead station who offered to route our distant HF radio calls direct from KEP (using an inverted V antenna using around 100W) to loved ones back in UK using the telephone network in the days long before satellite communications was the norm.

Regards

Andy

UPDATE 19 Feb 2011

The helicopters have now arrived. They came on the cruise ship Marina Svetaeva on Sun 13 Feb. One is parked in the 'hangar', which to the untutored eye looks suspiciously like an old whaling station engineering shed, and the other is parked outside on the nice flat concrete foundations of what was the freezer plant. Tony Martin and some of the team arrived on the same ship, followed by George on the Bremen on Friday 18 Feb. The remainder of the team are due in the next few days on the fishery patrol ship Pharos SG, along with seven containers of bait. Tony and his team are learning about the interesting problems that come with operating this remotely at the mercy of some pretty tortuous logistical chains, but there have been no show stoppers so far.

Hello,

The SGA Committee will be meeting meet on 21 January 2011. One of the agenda items will be to arrange an event to celebrate the Association's 10th anniversary in 2011.(Incidentally it is also the centenary of Scott and Amundsen's race to the South Pole)

Suggestio.ns so far have favoured a Reception and Dinner at
-a Cambridge College, a London Club,
-Natural History Museum,
-House of Lords

Or a longer weekend event:
-Whitby, exploring the Captain Cook cnnnection
-Bristol, with dinner on the SS Great Britain
-Portsmouth has a lot to offer as well
-Greenwich - Maritime museum (and, according to a blue plaque, James Clark Ross used to live in Blackheath). It would also be close enough to Dulwich for a trip to see James Caird.

If you have any suggestions, do write in.

Dear All,

Following on from the Environmental Management Plan, published ten years ago, and the update 'Plan For Progress' of five years ago, the FCO and GSGSSI have set out a strategy for the next five years.

You can see more details on the FCO website at:
http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/news/latest-news/?view=News&id=458810682

and the GSGSSI website at:
http://www.sgisland.gs/index.php/%28g%29SGSSI_Strategy_2010-2015?usesk

Minister for the Overseas Territories, Henry Bellingham, has commented that, “The publication of this strategy is an important step in ensuring the future security of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and illustrates the importance the Government attaches to our Overseas Territories. It sets out our priorities for action over the next five years and in particular highlights the environmental value of the islands which are internationally recognised for their biological importance.”

Season's greetings from rainy SG. We'll have some of that snow when you have finished with it.

Dear all,

With the elly season kicking off, now is a good time to watch the webcams.

There are two at King Edward Point, and one on Bird Island.

KEP Webcam 1 and KEP Webcam 2 can be seen on the GSGSSI website at http://sgisland.gs/index.php/%28h%29South_Georgia_webcam and webcam 2 at http://sgisland.gs/index.php/%28h%29South_Georgia_Webcam2

There's a service out there collecting the Webcam 1 images and making little animations for each day at http://zeitcam.com/showcam.php?cam=southgeorgia so we tend not to move that camera about much. However, we (Sarah mostly) do move webcam 2 around a little to find something of interest.

The Bird Island webcam is at http://www.antarctica.ac.uk/images/webcams/bi/index.php

Hi folks,

As well as keeping the pirates at bay and keeping legal fishing vessels up to scratch, our fishery protection vessel Pharos SG occasionally deploys drifting buoys for the South African Weather Service. These drift around, sending weather information back to the South Africans by satellite, so that they can predict the weather that is coming.

You can see the present positions of the buoys at this website. If you click on a buoy's entry in the table below you will see a track of the past ten days movements. It is not only the SAWS buoys that show up on this map. Some ships also contribute, including the BAS ships (in summer).

http://www.sailwx.info/shiptrack/shiplocations.phtml?lat=-54&lon=-36&radius=500

You can also track the JCRoss:
