I passed through Stanley on the way back to South Georgia last week and had a useful session with Darren Christie discussing various points of the new legislation. I am pleased to report that the omission of heritage etc. values as a reason for declaring a site as an SPA was an oversight and this will be included.

People may want to ponder the limited criteria that have been listed for declaring a Specially Protected Area. In particular there is no provision for protecting a site because of Historical, Heritage or Cultural attributes. There is push on to bring a range of new legislation online, mainly to update some very out-of-date laws, so there may be separate heritage legislation on the cards.

The SGA committee will be preparing a response to the proposed new legislation. However, we would like to take into account the views of everyone with an interest in South Georgia - so feel free to use this forum if you would like to make your views known!
